We are passionate about languages, cultures, diversity and the world. Also, we believe that throughout a learning and sharing process, we get to know other people, learn and explore common interests, break prejudices, misunderstandings and even promote comprehension as well as cooperation.
We are trying to make this world easier for people who want to move or have just moved to a new country. Our offer is simple:
- You can learn Portuguese and culture, or choose another course.
- You can volunteer to teach your language and culture.
At SPEAK you’ll find locals and migrants meeting together learning and teaching to each other. As a result, it is also a great place to meet new people from all over the world, a crossroads where cultures meet.

Why Cascais?
Cascais has a very heterogenous population, with many nationalities (118) and identities, where immigration is a rising phenomenon with demographical, economical, social and cultural relevance. According to SEF data (2013), there are 20124 immigrants registered in Cascais, which corresponds to 10% of the population, with a specific reality: there are immigrants with high academic degrees and, therefore, a high socioeconomical level; and there are immigrants with no or little educational background and that are in a low socioeconomical level. The resident immigrants are in working age. The informal support network is, in some cases, fragile – this is something that SPEAK has managed to solve in the cities where it has intervention, because it applies a methodology that promotes the creation of strong informal support networks.
The work in Cascais will be developed together with the City Hall of Cascais, so that it can complement its social intervention with this target audience.

Línguas, culturas, diversidade e o mundo são a nossa paixão, acreditamos que através de um processo de aprendizagem e partilha, conhecemos melhor os outros, aprendemos e exploramos interesses em comum, quebramos preconceitos, mal-entendidos e conseguimos até promover a compreensão e a cooperação.
Estamos a tentar facilitar a vida para quem quer mudar ou mudou recentemente para um novo país. A nossa oferta é simples:
- Podes aprender Português e a sua cultura, ou escolher outro curso.
- Podes voluntariar-te para ensinar a tua língua e a tua cultura.
No SPEAK, vais encontrar pessoas locais e migrantes juntas a aprender e ensinar. Como resultado, é também um lugar fantástico para conhecer novas pessoas de todo o mundo, um ponto de encontro de diferentes culturas.

Porquê Cascais?
Cascais tem uma população muito heterogénea, com diversas nacionalidades (118) e expressões identitárias, onde a imigração vem sendo um fenómeno crescente com relevância demográfica, económica, social e cultural. Segundo dados do SEF (2013), estão registadas 20124 pessoas imigrantes em Cascais, o que corresponde a 10% da população, com uma realidade particular: imigrantes com um nível de formação académica muito elevado e, consequentemente, com um nível socioeconómico elevado; e, por outro lado, imigrantes sem ou com pouca formação académica e que estão numa situação socioeconómica pouco favorável. Os imigrantes residentes estão na idade ativa. A rede de suporte informal é em alguns casos frágil – algo que o SPEAK tem conseguido criar nas cidades onde tem feito intervenção, porque aplica uma metodologia que promove a criação de redes de suporte informal fortes.
O trabalho em Cascais será desenvolvido em conjunto com a Camâra Municipal de Cascais que consegue assim complementar a sua intervenção social junto deste público-alvo.
